What's for lunch

by javier on 9/01/2011

In the spirit of making this a blog about what we eat instead of our thoughts about design here comes another lunch, this time in Krakow (Poland):

It was:

  • gulasz wieprzowy z ziemniakami (the stew)
  • placki ziemniaczane z sosem pieczarkowym (the potato pie with mushroom gravy
  • zestaw surówek (carrot, beetroot and coleslaw salads)

Yummy, huh? It was less than 6€ at Bar Mleczny.

Visual life

by javier on 9/01/2011

When we designed BlackVostok for WordPress we made it on the premise that we are visual beings and most of what we share and tell is a visual expression of our thoughts and experiences. Now Intel tells the same idea in a fancier way with this video for the Share Your Visual Life website:

One-button peak lapel tuxedo = timeless design

by gabriela on 5/01/2011

The New York Times began a beautiful series in January 2009 called One in 8 million. It uses photo and audio to convey an emotional narrative about the life, hopes, fears and desires of some of the people who inhabit New York City. It’s elegant, it’s touching, it’s incredibly well done.

Among the many enchanting stories, there is one in particular that caught our eye: a design consultant/ adviser/ counsellor/guide personified in a wedding wardrober. Mr. Kramer- Metraux talks about certain aspects of life that are particularly close to our hearts: elegance, beauty, timeless design.

The series received a Silver award in the Best of Multimedia Design 2009 competition organized by The Society of News Design.

Take a minute to browse through the rest of the stories, they’re certainly worth your time.

Verkami, a crowdfunding platform designed by Vostok

by gabriela on 4/01/2011

During the last months we have been working with Verkami to articulate and conceptualize what they wanted to become one of the best crowdfunding platforms out there. We designed it and are happy to announce it is now open to receive projects from all over the world.

The great thing about sites like Verkami is that while connecting creators and audiences, they take down the middleman, empower artists and turn into wonderful spaces where to spot truly smart and creative initiatives.

Some of the design elements we like the most

A detail from the creator’s admin page (project is still up and running):

and when the project has finally reached it’s original funding goal:

For those interested in the development, Linking Paths added the programming muscle.

Take a sec, check it out. No excuses to bum around: start a project or become a patron and make great projects come true!

It’s a pity certain things don’t last forever. We’re happy to announce though, our Vostok sleeves are all sold out :)

virtuallythere, virtually impossible

by javier on 26/12/2010

Virtuallythere.com is a service by Sabre, one of the big GDS’s to track your flights. If you want to sign up you have to chose a password that complies with this policy:

Something unique that you’ll remember, but hard for others to guess.

Should contain a minimum of 7 characters and maximum of 12 characters.
Should contain at least one numeric character.
The same character cannot appear more than twice in the password.
The same character should not repeat more than twice in a row.
There should be no spaces in the password.
The password cannot contain the characters Q,q,Z,z.

There’s gotta be some kind of reward to those who make it. Yeah, that’s probably it.

What's for lunch

by javier on 26/12/2010

A few different season mushrooms with zuchinni flowers as Vostok‘s Christmas lunch. They came with some delicious lamb ribs but we were so much into the food that we totally forgot the picture. It all was eaten at El Cisne Azul, the best place for mushrooms in Madrid.

What's for lunch

A few days ago I was invited to the biggest cheesefest I’ve ever attended: around 18-20 types of different cheese from around the world with great people at Gorriti and Isabel‘s place. Thanks!!

"Organic design"? Bullshit

by javier on 23/12/2010

Belive it or not, this is snow under the microscope:

Some designers like to say they create “organic designs” when their stuff is curvy, flowy and transparent lie flowing water or maybe rugged and imperfect like wood bark. But then you see these pictures of snow flakes under the microscope and think these designers are just bullshitting you to sell their stuff under a good looking label.

To me, design is…

by javier on 21/12/2010

We believe the best way to express our views on design is to let our clients speak for themselves:

We’d like to thank our clients and Riot Cinema for this video.
