Witnessing the death of an era. Stay tuned.

Page One is a documentary about The New York Times, about its journalists, about its newsroom. The film will premiere in Sundance next week.

Q : How do you know for sure something is dead (or in the path of being so)?

A : When you stick it into a museum or make a documentary about it.

Well, Helvetica has both (documentary and is in a museum), but it’s far from dead ;)

You’re absolutely right Jacobo. But there’s a catch isn’t there? You can’t compare Helvetica with The New York Times. Helvetica is an entity in itself; it’s not tied to an era, it’s not tied to capricious changes in fashion. That’s what Hustwit’s documentary was about. But newspapers are. They are tied to an era, tied to a monetization scheme, to a way of doing journalism. And that’s what’s changing, that what’s dying. And that’s what made me think of ‘Page One’ in these terms.

I’m sure the documentary will be about how alive NYT is, and I’m not saying it’s not, I’m just saying that in 20 years time this documentary will be cherished a lot because it’ll have captured a moment in time that will no longer be. And (this is a personal diversion) that’s too bad, because there’s still no one out there that is as good, at least as consistently good, as the NYT.
